FACTS AND STORIES FROM
THE RESTORATION SCHOOL

The Centro di Conservazione e Restauro (CCR) is a respected institute that conducts research and develops solutions for the prevention, monitoring, and maintenance of cultural heritage. Usually confined to laboratory spaces and discussed only among specialists, these activities come to life through an engaging and accessible exhibition.

Rather than showing traditional images of the work, the exhibition displays data, tools, materials, and unusual stories that reveal the distinctive world of restoration. The content was developed in close collaboration with CCR’s professors and experts.

Thanks to a flexible and collaborative approach by a diverse team of professionals led by Carlo Zoratti, the project introduces a fresh and inclusive design—making the exhibition space accessible to a wide range of visitors.

WALL OF FACTS

Visitors are guided by questions such as: What do we take care of? How big is it? When does it date back to? Who does what? — made immediate through illustrated infographics by Daniele Catalli.

WALL OF THINGS

Here, visitors can touch a selection of the many materials that are restored (What is it made of?), discover the tools of the trade (How do you use it?), and browse the centre’s varied annual supply list (What is needed?).

WALL OF STORIES

This section features curious objects and scale models, paired with audio stories from CCR’s past—such as scanning a mummy with a CT scan, removing chewing gum from ancient statues, or designing clever systems to restore royal carriages.
